The Atom (Custom)

On the trail, it's not just about what you pack, it's about what you choose to leave behind. Meet The Atom, a thoughtfully crafted pack for the ultralight hiker.

The Atom embodies the essence of less - hipbeltless, frameless, effortless. Tailored for those craving to go further, faster, it's your go-to for ultralight thru-hikes. No frills, just pure functionality.

This pack has few load assisting features and, as such, is only intended to be used by those with dialled in gear lists who like to enjoy the freedom of a light pack and moving without a frame or hip belt.

The Atom FAQ

What does recomended load capacity mean?

This is our best guess at what the average person could load into this pack while still being comfortable.

This is entirely dependant on your physiology so must be taken with a pinch of salt. i.e. If you are Chris Hemsworth (Thor... Phwoar!), you may well be able to carry more weight than, say, Gollum from the Lord of the Rings.

In general, we find our limits to be fairly accurate, however, If you find yourself nearing or exceeding the number listed with any regularity, then you should probably look at a more supportive pack from our range.

What is a base weight?

Your base weight is the total weight of all clothing and equipment that will be in your backpack while hiking. You should not include consumables like water, food, medicine or fuel.

i.e. the weight of an empty fuel canister can be considered for your base weight, but the fuel within it cannot.

Why is base weight important?

This is a somewhat philosophical question, as, base weight has more significance the longer you are planning to hike.

In general, base weight gives you an indication of your level of packing discipline. (Remember, base weight is the total weight of everything non consumable that you will be carrying) There is no one correct base weight for each backpack, provided you are able to add enough food and water to remain under our recommended load capacity for your chosen backpack.

i.e. on a 4 day trip, along with your base weight, you would have to add 4 days of food (let's assume 1kg of food per day), to keep pack weight under 8kg total, you would need a base weight of sub 4 kg where as the same hiker on a 2 day trip could afford a 6kg base weight to remain under the 8kg total.

Are Atom Packs backpacks waterproof?

Our packs are not waterproof.

We use highly waterproof fabrics but we do not tape the seams. Therefore some water may ingress into the pack during periods of extended rain.

Do I need to use a pack liner?

Yes, even though our materials are water resistant, the seams are not taped and thus water may ingress into the pack during extended rain.

Any items that you wish to keep dry must be kept in a waterproof stuff sack or liner.

Can I buy replacement elastic colours?

If you wanted to change the elastics then that is a quick way to update or refresh the look of your pack. You can purchase replacement elastic sets on our website:

Replacement Elastic Sets

(we do not recommend you replace the side pocket elastic unless it breaks as it is tricky to do)

Does The Atom have padding in the back panel?

No. The Atom is designed without this - this means you must be considerate when you pack it to make sure the back panel is free from lumps or pointy items. Check out Dexter's packing video for tips!

Can I add a hipbelt to The Atom?

Yes, this is possible from our accessories. Adding a hip belt will increase the load carrying capacity of The Atom.

If you are buying the pack with the intention of always using the hip belt, we recommend that you go for the torso size above yours (i.e. if you measure a Small you should purchase a Medium) this will ensure the straps fit you correctly.

We have two designs of hipbelt that are compatible with the Atom:

Webbing hipbelt

Padded Atom hipbelt

Is the Atom for me?

If you are asking this question, the likely answer is no. This pack is designed for the dedicated ultralighters only and will probably punish those who overpack it.

The next step up is The Pulse

This pack is still a significant weight saving for most customers, but it has a frame, foam and padded hipbelt to help support you.

Custom Products FAQ

What is your returns policy on custom orders?

All completed custom orders are final.

We cannot accept returns on custom work except for where there have been errors in manufacture so be sure to make sure you are totally happy with your order before proceeding to checkout.

Once you receive your pack please try it on at home and use our fit guide to check that you are happy with it.

Checking the Fit

Something not right? Please contact us with your order number to discuss your options.

I want a customisation that is not available on your website, can you do this for me?

A day pack just as we wanted it

It was great we could get a day pack without a hipbelt, which is unnecessary for the loads carried, or any other superfluous straps. Colours are great, although the green was a little darker than we viewed on the screen. Pity we could not specify a colour for the shoulder straps (or did I miss that option)?

Best Pack Ever

This is my favourite pack after my previous favourite pack (which is also an Atom Packs).
I now use my old pack 50L pulse for multi day/ week / month thru hikes where I need to carry shelter and food etc and I use my new Atom for Camino de Santiago, faster hikes and I’ll soon be trying it for something multi day where I just want to go ultra light.

Super well made by incredibly friendly people. Atom Packs are what a company should be, who are making back packs like they should be.

5 stars isn’t enough 😊

Wholeheartedly recommend!

Genuinely cannot recommend Atom packs enough 😍 You can really tell the difference between a fast-tracked factory line big brand bag, and the Atompack bag I got which was handcrafted with care and time. Quick shout out to Rachel in the customer care team who reassured me and put up with me when I was panicking about the timeline and my upcoming trips 🙈😅 I've had the backpack a few months now, it was a custom build with all the trimmings and awesome colours. I went to Washington State and completed the Three Fingers Lookout over 3 days, along with a trip to the Grand Canyon. So the backpack got dredged through rain, cold, high winds, rocks and wet, then complete opposite - scorching sun, dust and sand. I used it for everyday walks, and also filled it to the brim with overnight camping gear for hikes. Each time it was used there were no issues and the bag feels so sturdy, BUT SO LIGHT it's crazy. It was checked onto the plane as hold luggage and survived that as well!! The price point is amazing considering the length of time I know I will get out of this pack. It's so versatile I'll be able to attack any adventure or day-to-day task with ease. This is one of the easiest recommendations I've ever made. When it comes to gear as important as a bag, you really need to get it right first time. Do it right, do it once. That's my motto! Much love, Hannah Banana :) x

Do Yourself a Favor: Buy This Pack

This backpack is fantastic. It's clear that every detail is meticulously looked after by Atom Packs. The fact you can customize and the lengths to which you can go with the customization is astounding. I highly recommend the Dyneema stretch pockets, a bottom pocket, and a Y Strap for the top. I used this pack for a thru-hike of the Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne (HRP) and could not have been happier with the pack's performance. Even carrying far beyond the recommended load, I never once worried about my pack's performance. It still looks as good as new, and I've seen zero deterioration in the pack's materials or stitching. Do yourself a favor and order your custom pack now to get ahead of the one potential downside to this pack, which is the lead time; your future self will thank you.
